Experiences of the Workplace

The activities below outline the types of employer-led, meaningful experiences of the workplace we can support, and the suggested year groups each is suitable for. All preparation and review material is included.

Employer/employee visit to school (year 7/8)
Students introduced to local employers/employees who will give a presentation on the jobs in their field, provide hand-outs and take questions.

Visits to local outlets – job observations (year 7/8)
Students in groups (small groups or consecutive groups) attend familiar places such as local swimming pool, sports centre, cinema etc, to see the breadth of careers of employees. Approx 1 hour each time

Work shadowing (year 9/10)
Students spend one working day shadowing an employer/employee in the workplace, in an area of career interest. They will complete observation worksheets, take part in a question-and-answer session, be introduced to other employees and be given a tour of the workplace.

Workplace visits (year 8/9/10)
Groups of students visit the workplace, for between two and four hours, where they are introduced to various employees who explain their roles, undertake a tour of the premises and complete a questionnaire, or work-based activity.

Mock interview programme for whole year groups (year 10/11)
CV writing, email protocols, research preparation and online review, and one-to-one interview in school with local employer.

Virtual placement linking to career interest area (year 9/10/11)
Compile list of currently available virtual placement areas in identified areas of interest. Completing MEBP online review.

Extended placement in the workplace (10/11/12)
One-day-a-week in the workplace, for six weeks, extended by mutual agreement, for student’s schools believe will benefit from the extra support. Placements are monitored and reviewed by MEBP and school.

Work-based research project (year 10/11/12)
Students will undertake an online research project supported by local employers, who will set the brief and review with the student.

Supported internships, extended placements in the workplace, work shadowing, volunteering (year 13/14)
Bespoke - programmes directly linked to students’ aspirations and courses.
